In life, we are often faced with challenges and adverse life difficulties to various circumstances. These challenges may evoke ambivalent feelings or behavioral patterns which could affect our sense of self and the relationships we share with others.

Being overwhelmed by these challenges, we are often unable to utilize our coping strategies optimally. This for some leads to various levels of psychological distress such as irritability, disconnection, isolation, stress as well as anxiety. This can make it difficult for us to function optimally within our current surroundings.

During a process of psychotherapy, you are allowed the opportunity to talk about your concerns as well as explore and reflect on your thoughts and feelings within a supportive environment. Feeling heard and understood along with the relationship that you share with your therapist, allows for new meaning and insight to be uncovered. As such, you learn to cope better with current and or future life adversities.

But really, vulnerability is courage.
We must ask ourselves...are we willing to show up and be seen?"

I am a registered Counselling Psychologist in Centurion with a passion for working with adolescents and adults. My aim is to assist my clients in self-exploration regarding their thoughts and feelings in order to make known the various parts of ourselves which makes us such unique individuals. This allows my clients to reach a greater place of self-acceptance.

During individual sessions, it is important that I meet the unique needs of my clients. I, therefore, tailor my services to fit each of my clients as this allows me to respect their uniqueness and diversity which they bring with each therapeutic encounter.

Ethical and moral responsibilities towards my clients are of great importance to me. I, therefore, aim to strive towards professional, warm, and understanding relationships, as I feel this forms part of the therapeutic alliance between client and therapist in order to get the therapeutic work done.

It is not always easy to turn to the self and to reflect upon our fixed thoughts, personal feelings and inconsistent behaviours. Thus for some, therapy might initially be a somewhat daunting experience. When you however allow for the process to develop within a comfortable, caring and genuine therapeutic environment you are able to gain new insight to the more ‘concealed’ parts of the self.

Psychotherapy, otherwise known as counselling or therapy, is a confidential space where you are able to (with the help of a professional) comfortably talk about difficult thoughts, feelings and behaviours as well as reflect and make sense of them together. In doing so one is often able to gain new insights into these concerns as well as develop new strengths and coping strategies to be better equip oneself for future adversities.

Life in general, might bring about challenges; however it is often hard to know when to actually see a psychologist. As a guide you might need to consider counselling when these challenges start implicating your mood, thoughts and behaviour. More specifically, these challenges often start implicating your sense of self, relationships with others and your occupational functioning. It is then when we start seeking assistance.

In other instances, there might not be a specific concern at the time; however you would like to see a psychologist to learn about aspects of yourself and the relationships you share with others. As such, this process might guide you to help find answers to questions that you have regarding your purpose and goals in life.

It is of great importance that you find a psychologist that you feel comfortable with, as this facilitates the process of being able to share personal thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

For this process to develop, it is also important that the psychologist explains the process of therapy to you as well as address any further concerns that you might have. In addition, your psychologist should express genuine interest in who you are and what brought you to seek therapy. This relationship that you share with your psychologist is of utmost importance, as it provides the foundation for therapeutic work to take place in.

Therapy generally takes place once a week and consists of 50 minute sessions each. In some instances, clients might attend sessions more frequently. This often depends on the nature of their presenting concern.

Therapy can usually, either be brief (6-12 sessions) or it can last for longer periods of time (up to a year or even longer). You and your psychologist will most likely discuss the length of therapy as well as the type of therapy you will be most likely to benefit form. Your identified goals and the nature of your presenting concern usually influences the duration of the therapy process.
